NORTH LONG BEACH (CBSLA.com) — A suspect shot by a Long Beach police officer early Sunday died hours later from his wounds, according to authorities.
An emergency dispatcher received a call at around 12:20 a.m. reporting there was a man with a gun in the parking lot of a market near Artesia Boulevard and Butler Avenue, said Sgt. David Marander of the Long Beach Police Department.
An officer in the area found a man who reportedly matched the description given by the caller.
As soon as the suspect spotted the officer he began to run, and the officer pursued.
During the chase, the suspect reportedly pulled out a handgun which sparked an officer-involved shooting outside the market.
The officer shot the suspect in the upper body while managing to escape injury.
The suspect was transported to a hospital where he died a few hours later.
